As the COVID-19 pandemic has progressed many businesses have moved to remote work, and employees have been tasked with balancing major changes in both their personal and professional lives. As we continue to deal with a climate of uncertainty, the one thing we know for sure is that remote workers are going to be the norm in 2021.

Here are some tips on how to best manage them:

  • Set clear expectations and realistic goals and track progress employees are making

  • Be flexible and understanding; childcare, elder care, and other life demands may result in employees working odd hours

  • Shorten virtual meetings and ensure personal greetings take place amongst employees

  • Emphasize communication. Keep in frequent contact in a way that works best for each employee

  • Remember to listen and watch for signs of distress.  Using employee surveys can help

  • Build connections.  Create games and fun to relieve tension

  • Provide tools online to help people to collaborate

  • Celebrate success just like you would in the office

Utilizing these tips can help managers keep their remote employees productive, happy, and working together as a team.
