Job descriptions and employee handbooks are the first line of defense for business owners in the case of any legal action taken by an employee.

When crafted well they can also be used as building blocks for workforce planning,  setting salary and grade levels, and as a basis for performance management.

How to easily update?

  • Ask employees and managers to ID the key tasks of the position

  • Ask employees to keep track of what they do each day for a week and compare it to the list of key tasks

  • Review any job ads to see if they include any additional responsibilities.

  • Prepare a list of competencies required to complete the tasks.

  • Finally, list the physical requirements the job requires

Because the pandemic has forced many companies to alter the way they operate, it is a great time to reassess the skills needed to perform jobs.
