Can I fire an employee who shares their compensation info?

If you have employees, you know how sharing compensation information effects morale. “I should be making the same as ... ; My bonus is less than ...” are all statements we hate to hear. Instead of appreciating ... I don’t need to finish that statement.

The question business leaders have asked me is,  "Can I fire them?" According to an article published by SHRM, you probably should be advised not to do so. Employees are protected by the NLRB from participating in any activity that can improve the terms and conditions of their employment. NLRB protects both union and non-union employees in the private sector.

A better plan for dealing with this issues is to preempt these conversations with some transparency as to the rationale you use for raises and bonuses.
